WHAT TO DO: Write a 7-10 page script for a 10-15 minute podcast that follows up on a theme, idea, or research area prompted by this class. The script should be a specific, in-depth examination of a question that connects with the issue of historical remembrance. The typed script must rely on information and quotations from reliable outside sources and it must be properly documented using MLA style. Specific requirements are detailed below. Project steps, including models, are as follows:

TOPICS: You will choose your own topic, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • What is the history of lynchings of Chicano people in the U.S.?
  • What is an appropriate way to remember the people who were tortured and killed under the rule of Rafael Trujillo, the former President of the Dominican Republic?
  • How should the genocide of Native American people be memorialized?
  • What kinds of memorials get created for victims of traffic fatalities?
  • What are the central issues around memorializing the genocide in Rwanda?
  • What are the best ways to show disability in memorials?
  • How are people memorialized in music, writing, dance, or other creative forms?
  • What do you think is the most effective way to memorialize the Holocaust?
  • What are the formal features of street memorials like those we see painted on the sides of buildings near Bronx Community College?
  • What is the best way to honor soldiers killed in wartime?
  • Why might some people be unhappy with New York City’s 9/11 memorial?
  • Why should monuments to Confederate heroes be removed?
  • Why should we continue to preserve monuments that some people find offensive?
