memorials in everyday life

20s with Tubman and JacksonDue: September 25

WHAT TO DO: Write a three-four page paper (700-1,000 words) that answers this question:

If you had the power, how would you create, change, or remove a memorial and why?

The point of this essay is to explore the way we interact with memorials in everyday life, from a grand monument dedicated to Robert E. Lee to the $20 bill in our pocket to a bit of ribbon we might wear to remember an active-duty soldier. The proposal you make in your essay should show how the reading, listening, and viewing required for class has impacted your thinking, but it should also reflect your own concerns and values. You can suggest tearing down a monument to a person or event you consider objectionable, altering a memorial to bring forward some different way of remembering, or creating an entirely new memorial to remember a person or event you think deserves more public attention.
